Introduction to TV advertising

TV Advertising
TV advertising is television programming produced and paid by an organisation who send a message, usually with the intention to market their product through adverts.

Characteristics of three different contemporary TV adverts:
- Persuasive
- unforgettable characters and personalities
- originality - catchy theme tunes make an advert stand out
_______________________________________________________________________

How many adverts is it estimated that the average American consumes everyday? Where do you see adverts?
It is estimated that the average American views over 3,000 adverts every day. These ads are seen on bus billboards, TV adverts, supermarket shelves, windows, in telephone booths and even on floors.

What is the second most uttered word in the world?
Studies show that the most uttered word in the world is OK. This being understandable, however the second most uttered word in the world is coca-cola. Coca-cola ads have been around for several years, its audiences have reached worldwide as well as the product itself being known around the globe. It is because of this that it is the second most uttered word in the world.

Sometimes advertisers use a character or personality to help sell a product, why is this?
Characters and personalities are used to help connect viewers. For example, the Kellogg's Frosties advert uses the tiger to captivate the target audience making the advert worth watching. Without it the advert would have no appeal and would therefore loose interest.

Does advertising always work? Give an example.
Advertising doesn't always work. Sometimes a product misses the market and would fall. For example, the advert promoting the car, Edsel, didn't reach viewers expectations. It wasn't the ad itself it was the product that let it down which made the advert loose interest.

What research is an important phase of making a TV advert?
The research shown to be important when making a TV advert is primary research. This is conducted by asking selected groups of consumers questions to help them gather ways in improving the ad.

What does research show are effective methods of advertising?
Research shows that by using repetition in an ad it engages consumers and makes a memorable advert. Also by using animals, dogs in particular, and babies it captures the audience as some may relate to the ad and others may find it interesting to watch.

How do adverts stop us from turning over?
Adverts stop us viewers from turning over because they are entertaining and captivating. With them being this it draws viewers in and keeps them hooked throughout the ad.

What is the future of advertising?
As you know advertising is inescapable. There forever shall be ads but in order to make sure these ads get views a possible future for advertising is paying viewers to watch their ads.

Video Profile Evaluation

Unfortunately due to my video profile only partly uploading I am unable to present my video on my blog. It can be resolved however I haven’t the right equipment, software, and time to do so. This has affected my feedback evaluation as I am unable to identify the good and bad aspects of my video, based on what other people thought about it. In result I am going to give my own feedback and review my experience on the project.
When given the task to make a video profile, I had so many initial ideas on what I wanted it to look like, how I wanted it to be filmed, what shots I’ll use, how I’ll structure it etc. This stage, the pre-production stage was the most exciting and stressful part of the project. With so many ideas flowing through my mind, it was frustrating to decide on a final idea. When decided and at the beginning of filming, my decision changed again leading me to re-write my script. This affected my filming time but not drastically.
The filming process was enjoyable. I was camera operator for my partner which I felt I fulfilled well. The shots were accurate and original. It had variety and interest. I and my partner both shared the role of camera operator when filming my scenes. I particularly enjoyed and liked the bird’s eye view pan of me inside the college which contained footage of the college from different angles. I thought it was very well filmed as it went from a close-up of me introducing my college, to a zoomed out bird’s eye view shot of me, to then a pan shot of the college. It really focuses on the inner image subtracting the background, then the background drawing less focus to the image.
The post-production stage was interesting. Having experience with using final cut pro, I was familiar with the software which made it easier when editing. The editing process consisted of the uploading and inserting of the footage, having to organise the clips by re-naming them, the importing of music, inserting transitions and rendering the video, the structure of the video; what order the footage would go on in the timeline and the overall presentation of the advert. During this stage I progressed with my editing skills, I was able to try out and learn different techniques and also challenge myself which I always enjoy doing.
The feedback I would give myself, starting with the pros is I liked the typing soundtrack when it came to titles; it really went with the typewriter text. I also thought the transitions linking each scene fitted well and ran smoothly. The cons, the most important and noticeable one is to include more scenes and information, also to include a couple more shots and to adjust the sound levels ensuring that all scenes with talking audio in are at the same level.

The compression makes the file smaller allowing it to send faster.

I don't know any of my relatives on my moms side. My mom had a really tough childhood, not knowing her biological mother, her biological father not giving a shit. She was in and out of foster care until her uncle, her dads brother, and his wife adopted her. She had to leave school at an early age to care for her aunt/mother as she had cancer and her uncle/father was out working all the time. She later then lost her mother at 19 then shortly after her father passed. This left her in a bad way, it caused her to get involved in drugs and crime, introduced her to bad relationships and prison life. It saddens me that my mother went through all of that but it is her strength that I admire the most, it inspires me and makes me more determined to live a good life for her.

User Generated Analysis 1

This user generated video shows a guy introducing his act, it then follows with him singing Sandy from grease. The target audience for a video like this is the younger generation, from teens upwards. The digital platform this video appears on is the internet, via the video-sharing website, youtube. The purpose of most user generated videos is entertainment. This video is certainly an entertaining clip to watch. With the sound quality good and the singing bad, it falls in an alright pitched catergory. The sound quality is average, however the filming quality is bad, with only 1 shot shown throughout the entire video it lacks variety and interest. The comedy part of this video luckily makes up for all of the other absences.

Viral Market Analysis 2

Philips Advert

The Philips bodygroom advert opens with a young middle aged man talking to the viewer about the product he is selling. He then begins to explain the features of the product and the affects it gives. It is clear the advert is aimed at men, probably from the age of 18 (most common starting age of shaving) till about early 40's, late 50's. The advert is very soft and basic; white background, the man in a robe, and the product placed on a rich colour cushion giving it that classy look. The use of objects to give us an idea of what the 'bleep' words are is very cleverly used and gives the advert a touch of colour.
The digital platform used to view this advert is the internet, on youtube. The purpose of this advert is to promote the product and to entice viewers to make them want to purchase it. The image quality is very good, it is clear even when zoomed in at its close-up shots. The voice of the man is easily understood and is said at a steady pace. It is well filmed and overall an intriguing ad.

Viral Market Analysis 1

Ikea Advert

The advert begins with a child playing with his toys. It is clear in the advert, playing with toys makes mess. The words 'Tidy Up' appears on the screen, short and simple with very basic black font and a white background. It gives a clear picture of the message the advert is trying to get across. This is then followed and ended with a quick flip of different storage cabinets and the logo/name of the store. Although a child is mainly focused on in the advert, the target audience Ikea are aiming at is everyone. The digital platform used to show this advert is on the internet, through youtube.
The main purpose for making this advert is to promote the Ikea store. The idea is to encourage/persuade their audience into buying their merchandise. There were a variety of different shots used in the advert to make the advert look more interesting to the viewer. Having said that, the image quality was poor. The picture was slightly blurred and this let down the advert. Also letting down the advert was the sound. As loud and catching it was at the beginning, it slowly became annoying.
